The politicians need all kinds of "get out of jail" or help getting elected stepping stone leverage so they join in. The Nazi KKK types need victims to abuse so they can demonstrate how the rest of the country can do the same if and when they are able to use the technologies to perform their hate crimes (which of course includes theft of property and wealth).
